This shrub grows around the Mediterranean Sea. The main growing area is Greece. But only in the south of Chios does the resin coagulate into those drops that the islanders poetically call the tears of the mastic tree. They are used for a variety of products, from cosmetics to incense.

The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), also called wild pistachio, belongs to the sumac family (Anacardiaceae), like the real pistachio. Above all, the dried resin of the bushes, the so-called mastic, is used. The bushes on the island of Chios in particular have many resin containers under the bark, from which the resin runs out after scratching.

Here's how it's done: Take a fireproof saucer. Pour some fire sand into this and make 2-3 indentations in the sand with your little finger. Then place the charcoal tablet on the sand with the curve facing down. The grooves ventilate the charcoal from below and ensure optimal burning. (It's even easier with our incense burners, for example) Now you can light the charcoal with a match or lighter. Wait a minute or two for the charcoal to glow steadily. Now put the incense or the incense mixture in the hollow of the glowing coal. After about 20 minutes, the charcoal will have burned out and the mystical scent of incense or myrrh will remain in your room for a long time.
